Amazing Grebes……
The Grebe is an amazing water bird that can be found in many places across Australia. There is the Australasian Grebe, the Hoary Headed Grebe and the Great Crested Grebe. In a Canberra suburban pond there are some Australasian and Hoary Headed grebes. The amazing thing about the Grebe, to me, is how the parents raise their chicks. They allow the chicks to climb onto their backs and sit under the wings with their heads popping out to see the surroundings. The parent will then shake the chicks off and go about collecting food for them. They also teach them to dive for food as they grow older. I was lucky enough to witness this occurring and I hope the photos below capture this for you. It is something I will always remember and hope to find more, especially the Great Crested Grebe…..
